The district runs these events at the BSA campground and organizes the food, campfire, archery, bb gun range, crafts and more. The Pinewood Derby is one of the highlights of the scouting year. Everyone gets excited about entering a car in a Pinewood Derby. It’s a great opportunity for scout and parent to spend time together working on a fun project.

All the derby car kits have been given to the dens to be handed out to each scout. If you don’t have yours yet please check with your Den Leader.

There is lots of information and sessions available to help you prep for the race. The events are listed in the Calendar on this website and an overview is located on the site as well, click here for a shortcut.

Overnight at the Cal Academy

sleepover_kids_aquariumSomething new and fun this year. People have been asking for more overnights so here’s a fun one at the California Academy of Science. On March 8th scouts from all over the area will be heading to the Cal Academy to spend the night and Pack 61 will go as a group. It includes special animal demonstrations, planatarium shows, a pass to spend the next day there, sleep in some of the most interesting spots in the place, food and more. This is OPEN TO THE ENTIRE FAMILY (5 and over). We do need to register as a group so we need you to sign up for the event online. For more details and to signup click here.

Update: The Cal Acad just informed us that this event is filling up faster than expected. We will need to get our reservation in shortly. So please signup  ASAP and no later than Sunday night (2/3). While we don’t expect to get squeezed on spaces, if we do we will start with those who registered first and work our way down the list. Thanks.

USS Pampanito

About 40 Cubs and Parents attended the overnight on the USS Pampanito submarine in San Francisco. It’s a WWII submarine that saw many years of active service. Pack 61 filed the boat and had it to ourselves as we had guided tours, history lessons (I now know a lot about torpedoes), access to parts of the boat not generally open to the public and slept in the same bunks as the sailors before us.
